Building a Brand as an Influencer: My Journey, Lessons, and Advice
As an up-and-coming influencer, I've learned that building a brand isn't easy, especially when you're not yet a household name. I still have moments where I feel unknown, and my most desired brands haven't recognized me... yet. However, I'm grateful for the opportunities I've had with amazing brands like Miller, Chicken Licken, Dark & Lovely, DanUp, and more.
The Thrill of Collaboration
I still get butterflies remembering my first blog invite from Bain's Whiskey. It felt like being a celebrity! Since then, I've been fortunate enough to attend incredible events, like Kelly Khumalo's concert, and receive amazing goodie bags (who doesn't love freebies?). These experiences not only boost my confidence but also remind me that my hard work is paying off.
Overcoming Envy and Comparison
Initially, I'd envy established influencers like Mihlali, Lasizwe, and Kamo WW. Their success and brand recognition seemed unattainable. But then I realized:
"They're running their own race, and I'm running mine."
Comparing myself to others only hindered my progress. Instead, I focused on:
- Developing my unique voice and style
Creating quality content that resonates with my audience
- Building meaningful relationships with my followers
Lessons Learned
As I continue to grow my brand, I've learned valuable lessons:
- Start now and be consistent: Building a brand takes time, effort, and perseverance. Don't wait for the perfect moment; start now and keep pushing..
- Stay in your lane: Focus on your unique strengths and style, and you'll attract your desired brands.
- Usuality content is key: Invest in producing high-quality content, whether videos or pictures. It's essential for grabbing attention and building credibility.
- Research and ask questions: Understand your niche, target audience, and brand partners. Don't be afraid to ask questions or seek guidance.
My Goals and Aspiration
I dream of collaborating with big brands like Nike, The Fix, and Mr. Price. While it may take time, I'm committed to consistency and quality. My goal is to become a respected influencer, known for my authenticity and unique perspective.

If you're just starting out or struggling to make a name for yourself, remember:

- Stay patient, persistent, and true to yourself.
Building a brand as an influencer requires dedication, resilience, and creativity. While it's not easy, the rewards are worth it. I'm grateful for the opportunities I've had, and I'm excited for what's to come.
