3 EFFECTS OF HOMOPHOBIA AT SCHOOL
I would like to dedicate this article to every school attending queer kid
who is having a hard time dealing with homophobia, discrimination, prejudice
and hatred because of expressing their sexuality in what we call a democratic country.
To those who do not know, nobody choose to have a certain sexual orientation,
it's like a birth right, you are born with it and no rehab will ever institutionalize that.
The best thing you can ever do when someone comes out as gay is just accept
them and treat them as equal as you treat straight people, that is very priceless.
I have worked with kids for many years and I'd like to think I have got
familiar with how they deal with issues of bullying and homophobia at
school - the effects are always the same.
Here are five symptoms I have picked from queer kids who
are experiencing homophobia at school.
1. SUICIDE
Most kids at school hide their sexuality because of homophobia and how
their lives will change when they come out (e.g. Friends will disassociate).
Some come from homes were expression of sexuality is allowed so they
they think that school kids will be as friendly as home but things change, bullying
starts, cyber or physical, and then that changes the behavior, the kid feels like
an outsider and feels like the world is not a better place to be and ultimately
decides to take their own life, at that young age.
2. ALCOHOLISM & DRUG USE
While there are no researches that align alcoholism with the LGBT+ community,
society’s rejection and
oppression of homosexuality is the
reason
for this high incidence of
alcoholism with the queer kids at very young age.
They find an escape in alcohol and then end up doing things that
can actually ruin their future, like losing focus at school and also skipping class just
to use illicit drugs TO get high and forget about the isolation they are receiving
from their home and at school.
3. DEPRESSION
Growing up in a climate of homophobia lays the foundation of depression around
queer kids. Living in a world of fear where you have to hide your sexuality is very
stressful. These kids finds it hard to cope with the negative reaction of
coming out and how religion is used as sword to fight against homosexuality.
Dealing with hiding their sexuality also causes anxiety which is most likely
to cause depression. What people don't know is how the hatred against
queer young people causes mental health problem. this is very serious.
To be honest, these are not the only effects, there are many of them but
we need to protect these children, accept them for who they
truly are, love them and let them express their sexuality in what we
we call a free and democratic country. A policy that protects queer kids
in schools should be tighter than it has ever been.
Thank you for reading my blog once again.
